Prof. Wilhelm Group
The research group of Prof. Dr. René Wilhelm at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Clausthal University of Technology, develops molecular materials and catalytic methods for sustainable chemistry. Our research combines organic synthesis, photochemistry, electrochemistry, asymmetric catalysis and materials recycling. Our main research areas include organic and metal-based photoredox catalysts, redox-active molecules for aqueous organic redox-flow batteries, camphor-derived chiral N-heterocyclic carbene ligands for asymmetric catalysis, and the recovery, functionalization and reuse of graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries. We also investigate chemical and catalytic approaches to the recycling of polymer-based composite materials. Our work ranges from the synthesis and characterization of new molecules and catalysts to mechanistic and computational studies and their application in organic synthesis, electrochemical energy storage and sustainable recycling processes.
