Prof. Dr. René Wilhelm
Curriculum Vitae
Since October 2019, Prof. Dr René Wilhelm has been Full Professor and Chair at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Clausthal University of Technology.
He began studying chemistry in 1993 at the University of Hanover, Germany. He graduated in 1998 after completing his diploma thesis in the group of Prof. Butenschön. He then moved to London and received his Doctor of Philosophy from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in 2001 under the supervision of Dr Widdowson. Thereafter, he spent one year as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Vollhardt in Berkeley, California. This was followed by six months of postdoctoral research with Prof. Magnus in Austin, Texas. In 2003, he began his independent academic career as a junior-professor at the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. He completed his junior-professorship in 2009 with a Habilitation at the TU Clausthal. He was associate professor at the Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń in the summer semester 2010. From 2010 to 2019, he was Professor of Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Paderborn University.
He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Chemical Society and the German Chemical Society (GDCh). He is an Editor-in-Chief of Zeitschrift für Naturforschung B: A Journal of Chemical Sciences. Between 2001 and 2002 he was a Feodor-Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He was awarded a Heisenberg Fellowship from the German Research Foundation in 2010 and received a Thieme Chemistry Journals Award in 2016. In 2010, he was also offered a W3 professorship at the University of Koblenz-Landau, which he declined. He serves as Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the TU Clausthal since 2024.
